For the price of a basic Mitsubishi Mirage in Canada, you can have a basic Micra, and about a used Cavalier or beat up old Buick LeSabre’s worth in change.
Or, if something Korean/American tickles your fancy, you can have a Spark for $7 more than a Micra.
It’s funny, everything else is getting more expensive in Canada, but cars seem to just keep getting cheaper and cheaper. For a while Mitsubishi made the Mirage under 10 grand too, but that was scrapped with the facelift.
And the Micra has it’s own spec racing series, too.

How are they selling a Spark for under ten thousand Trudeau-bucks?

I seriously have no idea.
Witchcraft, most likely.

Here’s a screen shot from the German Mitsubishi site. Note that this price already includes 19% VAT.

I like this generation of Micra. It looks so excited to be a slow, miserable city car. It revels in its mediocrity.

Meanwhile, if I feel the urge to buy a 1.2 Micra it’ll cost me almost €16,000.

Why that much? It starts at €12200 in the Netherlands. €7100 for the car, €1500 VAT, €3600 CO2 emissions tax/fuel economy penalty (no joke). That’s steep already.

Or I could buy a Miata ($3100), an XJ($1500), a WJ Overland ($5000) AND have enough money left over for dignity and self respect!

You’ll need to ask the importers! 23% VAT and 17% VRT, charged on the price including VRT so 17% of 16,000 which is €2,720. As to why that should give €16,000....

When I was delivering for a parts store, everyone was excited to drive the new Micra. Absolutely delightful bare-bones car. Didn’t even have power locks. It’s very refreshing to drive a car that only exists to car and isn’t pretending to be a living room. Lightweight and oh so tossable.

The engines will be out of my Xterra and 944 at the same time for about a week this summer. I can’t decide if I want to rent a Micra, or a drop top Camaro. The struggle is real.
